I was there during the Muslim holiday of Eid. Most of the stores are closed on that day and for several days after so plan your trip accordingly - you won't be able to shop during those days.

You also will have lots of difficulty booking buses and trains during Eid because everyone is going back to home villages. I had wanted to travel solo up country but gave up in the face of everything being booked up.

Instead, I booked a three day trip to Rajshahi and Bogra to look at the countryside and visit some of the historical ruins. I did not see one Western tourist during the entire three days, although I was visiting sites written up in the LP guide.

Bangladesh Expeditions set up the trip for me with a car, driver and guide. While they emphasize Dhaka and vicinity trips, they arrange trips farther out as well, including the Sunderbans. The student guide I had was from Rajshahi and was therefore very knowledgeable about where we went. He also took me home to dinner there. Several days later B.E. took me on a day trip on a river and a 3 day visit to Mamun's (the company owner) village about 30 miles northeast of Dhaka.

This was the best part of the trip as I got a chance to walk and rickshaw to about 10 small villages. The countryside is quite appealing. The narrow lanes connecting villages are raised up on levees about 10-15 feet high, are lined with trees and meander above small farm plots and ponds. Many of the villages have hand operated looms and you could see dyed yarn and thread drying on lines. Of course all of these villages have tea shops where mostly men hang out and watch videos and talk. People were uniformly friendly and you would draw a surrounding circle, anywhere you stopped. I stayed in Mamun's family compound and I would recommend this to anyone who wants this kind of experience. The day of Eid occurred while I was there and I had a singular opportunity to observe the prayers, animal sacrifices, and traditional hospitality among neighbors and relatives.
